When chaos takes over the world there are three ways that I have seen people respond:

Some people do less than what is required to survive.

Some people do just enough to survive.

Some people do more than what is required to survive.

I like to think of myself as the last kind of person. When chaos reigns and uncertainty becomes certain I find my zone. I seek out the optimal situation for myself to thrive. I know how to grind and I understand what it takes to push through tough times and survive.

I know these things about myself because I have been an entrepreneur for most of my life. Entrepreneurs know how to suffer, trust me.

The people in my circles who have really grown and succeeded through the pandemic are mostly entrepreneurs or ex-entrepreneurs who have a taste for trauma. People who know that shit goes wrong all the time. People who understand that the world is not in chaos, the world is chaos. People who know that chaos comes with patterns, lessons and opportunities. People who get on with it, find the gaps, fill the cracks that emerge and make the sale to survive and thrive.

Since the start of lockdown in SA, I have been writing a weekly newsletter in partnership with the Daily Maverick to help people trying to do more than what is required to survive.

Every week I sit down and compose my thoughts on a topic to help business owners build better lives and better businesses. I have loved every single edition of the newsletter because it makes me think about my craft and the art of building businesses and lives. Every week I connect with more and more entrepreneurs, founders, business owners, freelancers, business leaders, executives and managers. Every week I am lucky enough to have many thousands of people read and reply to me with their own battle stories and lessons.
